I’m seeing gen ai being used against deeply unstructured data, like customer complaints that are free form, to good use. And also back office automation, which should have been automated using ML techniques but companies didn’t invest, and now are crowing about how great ai is to solve such problems.

It is being used in a lot of good ways! Substack's support chat-bot uses generative A.I. in a fairly good way. To your point about ML algorithms, many people who use A.I. as a buzz word are referring to anything related to it; ML is quite fundamental to the A.I. we use today. I would imagine that the "generative A.I." used in these companies is not actual generative A.I., rather ML algorithms. I may be wrong about that last part, as I haven't looked into it too much.
